Solarban® 70 glass featured in one of Architectural Record’s top 2016
Solar control, low-e glass adds energy-efficiency to Manhattan’s iconic VIA 57 West
PITTSBURGH, May 23, 2017 — Solarban® 70 (formerly Solarban® 70XL) solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glass by Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG Glass) is a key component in VIA 57 West, which Architectural Record named one of the top 10 projects of 2016. The three-sided, 32-story high-rise was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).
Solarban® 70 glass was specified for VIA 57 West because of its positive impact on both the environment and the daily living experience of its occupants. Solarban® 70 glass provides a transparent, color-neutral aesthetic and exceptional solar control, striking the right balance between form and function. When coupled with conventional clear glass in a one-inch insulating glass unit (IGU), Solarban® 70 glass achieves visible light transmittance (VLT) of 64 percent and a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27, which yields a light-to-solar (LSG) ratio of 2.37, making it one of the highest-performing products in the industry.
“Vitro Glass is honored that Solarban® 70 glass was specified for VIA 57 West, a building that already is achieving iconic status on the Manhattan skyline,” said Glenn T. Miner, director of construction with Vitro Glass. “It is exactly the kind of project this glass was formulated for – one with an emphasis on energy and environmental performance but also consciously designed to maximize views and connect residents to the outdoors.”
Solarban® 70 glass has been expanding the design possibilities for architects for more than a decade, enabling them to incorporate vast areas of highly transparent vision glass into building facades without a corresponding increase in cooling equipment capacity.
Solarban® 70 glass meets requirements of the Cradle to Cradle Certified® program at the Bronze level. Vitro Glass has more architectural glass products certified by the program than does any other float glass manufacturer.
